Medical Brigade

The availability of adequate and sustainable healthcare services for people living in rural communities remains a major problem in public health. Poor rural healthcare both quality and access is a strong contributory factor in poor health outcomes in rural communities. The most affected people are women and children.

Do you want to make an impact as a volunteer in a rural community? If yes, then this is the opportunity for you to do so.

IKA Medical Brigade with the partnership of amazing chiefs and local leaders in the communities provides week-long intensive medical volunteer opportunities in some selected rural communities in Ghana. This opportunity is available for nurses, pre-med students, college students, and medical professionals abroad.

The medical brigade which is also known as mobile health clinics is a station set up by health professionals and volunteer students to bring basic healthcare to deprived and underserved communities.

At the clinic settings, students will get the opportunity to shadow medical doctors and nurses, take vital signs and gather symptoms in triage, evaluate symptoms and diagnose patients, filling and prepare medications in the pharmacy. All this will be done under the guidance of a professional medical officer. Students will also get the chance to rotate between multiple stations.

Volunteers with no or little medical experience will have the opportunity to lead public health educational workshops such as healthy living, malaria prevention, and other important health topics with the help of community peer educators, help pack medications under the guidance of a local pharmacist, assist doctors during consultations and also assist during triage.

IKA medical brigade aims to help and support communities that have very little access to basic healthcare in rural areas. The solid relationships built with key members of the community, make it fluid and very easy when following up on the community.

As a volunteer, you will benefit from meeting new people, learning new skills, gaining experience, and improving self-worth.

Public Health

Public Health has been defined as the science of preventing diseases, prolonging life, and improving the health of communities through education, policy-making, and researching diseases.
